Malta is a year-round destination, but it is not a year-round drive. The seasons change the roads more than they change the weather forecast, and the difference between a good week behind the wheel and a frustrating one is often just timing.
Spring is the best of it
April to early June is when the island looks its best and drives its best. The countryside is still green from the winter rain, temperatures sit comfortably in the low twenties, and the roads have not yet filled with August. It is the ideal window for a convertible: warm enough for the roof down all day, not so hot that you want the roof up and the air conditioning on.
Summer is glorious, and busy
July and August bring the heat — frequently into the mid thirties — and the crowds that come with peak season. The driving is still enjoyable, but plan around it: move early in the morning or late in the afternoon, expect the coastal roads and the bays to be busy, and know that a parked car in direct sun becomes an oven within the hour.
- Roof-down months, realistically: April to June, then September and October.
- In July and August, drive early or late and park in shade where you can.
- Winter rain is short but heavy, and Maltese roads drain slowly.
Autumn is the quiet secret
September and October keep most of the summer warmth while the crowds thin out. The sea is still warm, the light gets softer for the coastal drives, and Dingli at sunset in October is worth arranging a trip around. If you want summer conditions without the summer traffic, this is the window.
Winter is milder than you think
Malta rarely gets properly cold — daytime temperatures usually sit in the mid teens. What it does get is rain, in short heavy bursts, and roads that surface water quickly. It is a perfectly good time to visit and an easy time to drive, with empty roads and no queue anywhere. Just do not count on the roof coming down.
So when?
If the driving is the point of the trip, come in May or late September. If the trip is fixed and the driving is a bonus, come whenever you like — but pick the car for the season. An open car in May is transformative. In August, the air conditioning matters more.
